Oh, Hello

Oh, Hello is a set that I just haven't used enough.  I've been wanting to make a card using the In-Color color combination of Baked Brown Sugar, Crisp Cantaloupe, and Pistachio Pudding, and I just thought this set worked well with those colors.  While this card looks simple, I will make the disclaimer that there was a bit of work that went into it.  Not hard work, mind you, just a little time consuming.  To get the arrow stripe up the side, I got out my trusty Stamp-a-ma-jig to make sure the arrows were perfectly aligned.  Then I stamped the other "arrow" stamp in each of the three colors, and cut out each of the pieces in order to glue them down in the alternating pattern.  The oval chevron image fits perfectly into the third smallest of the Ovals Collection Framelits, which makes cutting that out super easy.  Then I cut the flower out with my paper snips.  Don't look too closely...I didn't do that great of a job!  I've gotten so spoiled by using Framelits to cut everything out!  I'm not sure about the flower there...what do you think?  Should it stay, or should I have left it off?

Stamps:  Oh, Hello
Ink:  Baked Brown Sugar, Crisp Cantaloupe, and Pistachio Pudding
Paper:  Naturals White card stock
Accessories:  Big Shot, Ovals Collection Framelits, Clear Embossing Powder, Heat Tool, Paper Snips, Stamp-a-ma-jig

Truly Grateful

I don't show nearly enough masculine cards here on my blog, so it's high time that I did.  This card uses the brand new set Truly Grateful, from the Holiday Catalog (which will be available starting August 1).  There are some beautiful images in this stamp set, but the wood slice that you see above is the reason that I got this set.  I love anything woodsy, so I just had to have this.  On a side note, I'm totally a woodsy/camping girl...I would much prefer to go camping in the mountains/woods than to go to the beach.  I know I'm completely in the minority on that one, but I grew up living in the woods and I guess no matter what, I'm always drawn back there.  Although if someone wanted to send me on a free beach vacation, I would not turn it down!

Anyway, back to this card.  I love using the Woodgrain embossing folder with this stamp...the more woodgrain, the better!  I lightly sanded a piece of Early Espresso Core'dinations card stock and clear embossed the sentiment on it.  Oh, and there's one little wood slice that I cut out and popped up with a Stampin' Dimensional.  I just love all the browns and the woodgrains together.

So what about you?  Mountains/woods or beach?

How Not to Make a Card

I can't even believe I'm showing this card for the world to see.  At first glance, it looks OK, right?  Yeah, not so fast.  I made one huge mistake, so let's consider this post a public service announcement of sorts.  Don't use glue under taffeta ribbon.  If you didn't notice before, I'm sure that you can now see the line of glue under the ribbon on this card.  Um, whoops.  Here's the best part...the only reason I put the ribbon there was to cover up the tops of the striped banners that were sticking out from behind the green card stock. A mistake on top of a mistake.  Nice.

Speaking of green card stock, don't get too attached.  This card is full of retired product, including that Mellow Moss card stock and the Outlaw DSP.  It's time for me to start using up my stash, and this DSP seemed like a good choice for a masculine card that I needed in a hurry (which is also why I didn't fix the ribbon/glue fiasco.)

So there you go...not the world's most beautiful card, but a functional and easy layout that I hope you'll try on your own.  Just don't use glue and taffeta ribbon.

Paper:  Outlaw DSP (retired), Mellow Moss (retired), Chocolate Chip, and Naturals Ivory card stock

One More {Mosaic Madness}

OK, this is it with the streak of Mosaic Madness cards...at least for a little while!  I can't stay away from my new favorite set for too long!  I love the simplicity of this card.  I used the chevron oval image from Oh, Hello in Baked Brown Sugar (stamped off once) and love the combination of it with Mosaic Madness.  Soft Suede and Pool Party combine beautifully with Baked Brown Sugar (which is possibly my new favorite brown).  This is a quick card to put together, and I'm sure that it would look fantastic with so many different color combinations.  In fact, I really want to recreate this one with Crisp Cantaloupe, Pistachio Pudding, and Baked Brown Sugar.  I think that would look amazing!  This is a great card to CASE, so give it a try with three of your favorite colors!

Mad About Mosaic Madness

Can you tell I'm on a bit of a Mosaic Madness kick?  This was another failed attempt at a card for stamp club.  I was trying to figure out a good way to combine some of the new In Colors without needing a lot of In Color card stock, because I only had one assorted pack.  Certainly not enough of any one color to make 14 cards.  I was loving the combination of Crisp Cantaloupe, Pistachio Pudding, and Baked Brown Sugar together, but needed something else as the base.  Enter Calypso Coral.  It does blend well with the three newbies, but definitely brightened them up a bit more than I had planned.  But I still like it, even if it wasn't the subtle look I was going for.  (Note to self:  order a pack of Baked Brown Sugar card stock right away!)  The linen thread works perfectly with this card, though, probably because it pretty much matches the Baked Brown Sugar card stock.

Mini Mosaic Madness

Warning:  I've been playing with the Mosaic Madness stamp set a LOT and will likely have a week's worth of Mosaic Madness posts.  If you don't love this set as much as I do, please be patient. :)

I am in love with this color combination.  I've had scraps of these colors on my desk for the past week, just waiting for the right project to use them.  I was struggling to come up with a card for stamp club, and just decided to use this combination with Mosaic Madness.  I think the richness of these colors goes perfectly with this set.  Although I'm hard pressed to find a color combination that doesn't work well this this set.  I may have mentioned once or a hundred times before that I love this set.

I did use some retired ribbon on this card, but that's easily replaced with a strip of Rich Razzleberry card stock.  I'd probably add some paper-piercing or crumple it up, just to give it some texture.  I'm all about the layers of texture on my cards.  It's what takes a card from good to great.  I also used some rhinestones on this one.  Do you ever have certain color combinations that you just KNOW need a rhinestone and not a pearl?  Or am I the only one and this just confirms what a weirdo I am?  Don't answer that.  These rich colors screamed rhinestone to me, and I love the dazzle it adds to this card.  And speaking of rich colors, I think I've gotten over my resentment toward Crushed Curry for replacing my beloved More Mustard.  I still miss More Mustard, but I really, really do love the fresh look of Crushed Curry.  I guess there is room in my heart for both colors.

Washi Tape Love

After dealing with computer issues yesterday, I'm a little slow in posting this week.  Nothing like starting out a Monday by discovering that your laptop is useless until you purchase a very expensive replacement part.  I love our Apple products, but they seriously need to develop a power cord that lasts more than two years.  Or, if they are really going to have such a short life span, then they need to drastically reduce the price on those babies.  We're on cord number three now.  And they are. not. cheap.  Oh, and the battery needs to be replaced as well, hence the uselessness of the laptop without the cord.

But you're not here to listen to me whine about my computer issues...you want to see a card.  This is a quick and cute little 3"x3" card.  I simply cut out the heart with my trusty Big Shot and the Hearts Collection Framelits.  I then placed a few pieces of Gingham Garden Designer Washi Tape on a 2 1/2"x2 1/2" piece of Whisper White card stock, and adhered it to the inside of the front flap.  I popped a couple of (retired) buttons on the front, and stamped a little sentiment on the bottom.  Voila!  This would be perfect to stick in someone's lunch with a little "I love you" note.  Easy-peasy and super cute!

Create A Cupcake

I mentioned the other day that I've been in a stamping slump lately.  I think this happens to everyone once in a while, no matter how creative a person they are.  One of the ways I like to break out of this slump is by looking for inspiration in different places.  In this case, I played with a new color combination.  I like to leaf through the catalog or waste spend time on Pinterest looking for new color combinations (you can follow my stamping board here...there's lots of inspiration and I'm always pinning more!)

Anyway, this color combo came from Pinterest, and I really love how these colors work together.  I can't even tell you how much I'm loving Crushed Curry with Island Indigo.  You'll be seeing this pairing again soon!  I also used an old Mojo Monday sketch to really help me dig out of the slump I've been in.  I don't sew on my cards much (mostly due to laziness...I have to get out of my stamping chair plus it means I have to change the needle on my sewing machine.  I know, how lazy can one person be???)  But I decided to sew on this one, and I love the frame it creates.  Another detail that I really like on this card is the sparkly frosting on the cupcake.  It doesn't show up that well in the picture above, but hopefully you can see it in the one below.  The little heart is also pretty cute, if I do say so myself. :)

{CASE} Simple Butterfly

I tend to be fairly original in my card designs, but every now and then I just need to CASE another person's work.  Some people do this all the time, and that's totally fine!  There is absolutely NO shame in CASEing a card...because much of the time, we add our own original touches to the design.  But even if that's not the case, it's the creating that counts, not whether or not the design in original to you (although it's always good to give credit to the original artist!)

When I saw this card by Mary Fish, I just loved the simple, clean lines of it.  I've been in a bit of a stamping slump lately, so I knew this was a great card to CASE.   As you can see, I've just changed up the papers and the sentiment, but pretty much kept everything else the same.  I do love her clean and simple designs, which is what attracted me to this card.  I think the paper-piercing is my favorite part!

How about you?  Do you like to come up with original designs, or do you prefer to CASE?

Mosaic Banners

Just a quick simple card today using my absolute favorite from the new catalog, Mosaic Madness.  You'll also notice that I've used the coordinating embossing folder and punch, and also threw in some of the Gingham Garden Designer Washi Tape!  That stuff is the best when you're in a hurry!

I decided to leave this card without a sentiment, because sometimes, it's just nice to have a blank card on hand.  They are great to send as a note card as is, but also nice to have so they can be customized for any occasion when the need arises.  I love the bright colors, but am realizing that I'm missing Lucky Limeade.  I think it would be better with this combo than Old Olive.  Maybe one day I'll get my wish and it will return. :)

Stamps:  Mosaic Madness
Ink:  Daffodil Delight, Old Olive, Pumpkin Pie, and Melon Mambo Classic Ink Pads
Paper:  Naturals White, Pumpkin Pie, Old Olive, and Melon Mambo card stock

Happy Birthday America!

I realize this isn't a typical Independence Day card (Is there such a thing?  Do people really send those?)  but it is our country's birthday, so it works, right?  Actually, this card is going right in my mailbox for my Grandpa.  He's a patriotic kind of guy and his birthday is this weekend.

I love the retired 4th of July stamp set, probably because I love watching fireworks.  It's looking a bit ominous out at the moment, and I'm hoping that there won't be any rain to ruin our plans for the evening.  No picnics or anything exciting going on today, but tonight we'll be off to watch fireworks...it's just not the 4th of July without that!

Blown Ink Butterflies {Papillion Potpourri}

As you can see, I had lots of fun with the blown ink technique and butterflies.  While a similar color combination to the one I used last week, this one includes Pool Party, and completely changes the look.  To make the butterflies, I embossed them with white embossing powder first, then did the blown ink, using So Saffron and Pool Party.  Because the drops of ink are going directly to the paper, it's best to go up a shade, rather than using the same exact color as your papers.

Stamps:  Mosaic Madness, Teeny Tiny Wishes, Papillion Potpourri
Ink:  So Saffron and Pool Party refills, Bermuda Bay and Crushed Curry (to dye the twine) Classic Ink Pad
Paper:  Crushed Curry, Pool Party, Bermuda Bay, and Naturals White card stock
Accessories:  Elegant Butterfly and Bitty Butterfly punches, Big Shot, Square Lattice embossing folder, Bitty Banners Framelits, Whisper White Baker's Twine, Stampin' Dimensionals

My Stampin' Space {After}

So, I'm finally posting my "after" pictures of my stampin' space.  And why yes, it still looks cluttered!  I hate to break it to you, but it always will.  There is 17 years worth of stamping in that little corner of my basement, and I am not very good about parting with things.  I desperately need to cull some of my stamps, which has actually gotten easier over the past few years.  Deep, deep down, there is a minimalist wanting to break out. :)

So while my space is cluttered, it's an organized clutter.  Want to take a tour of my little space?

This is the area right behind me.  These dressers were in my bedroom growing up, then were used for my girls when they were babies. Now they house things like wrapping paper, bows, and various stamping tools.  The wrapping stuff is in the shorter one, and the stamping stuff is in the tall skinny one.  On top of that you can see that I have some envelopes (because I'm not sure where else to keep them...any suggestions for storing them?), my Bind-it-All, and my Simply Scored tool and plates.  The top of the shorter one holds a filing crate which is filled with business papers and forms, and another box which holds several in-progress scrapbooks.  I think I'm on 2007.  Yeah.

Moving right along...I didn't take a picture of my cleaned off desk, other than the one above.  I know it looks anything but clean, but for me, this is a clean as it gets.  And while looks can be deceiving, it's well organized in that state.  To the right of my desk are several handy shelves, as well as my punches.  I like to have my tools right at my finger tips, so ribbon, punches, and ink are on the lower shelf.  I also keep scissors, my paper piercing tools, and my heat tool for embossing there as well.

Above that are shelves that hold my Stampin' Around Wheels, samples of some of my favorite projects (a couple of them even won awards), my markers, and all my DSP and 12x12 card stock, which is organized by color collection.  Current DSP goes in one holder, and then there are two others for retired DSP.  Three 12x12 holders of DSP...think I should use some of that up?

Here's a close up of my Color Caddy.  Now, I realize that you can actually get a better picture by looking in the catalog, but you'll notice something different on mine.  I have duplicates of some of the colors.  As a customer, this is completely unnecessary, but as a demonstrator, it's nice to have two of the same color at events.  So I put both pads of the same color in my caddy (which does have the old extension that's no longer available, so I have extra space to do this.)  You'll also note that I still have some of the old clam shell style ink pads.  I prefer to spend my money on more exciting things, and these still work just fine, so I haven't felt the need to replace them.  The top holds all the refills, which I highly recommend getting if you haven't already.  I held off for YEARS until I finally invested in getting the sets of refills, and now I'm finding myself stuck because I want to use some of the new color refills and I don't have them yet!

Underneath the lowest shelf, I store my card stock in two plastic bins on the floor.  I am in a basement, after all, and while water hasn't really been an issue (it was once),  I'm not willing to risk losing that much card stock.  Each color gets a hanging file folder, and they are organized by color collection.  I've done this different ways over the years, generally following the order listed in the catalog (why yes, I AM a type-A).  However, the order bugged me all through the last catalog year, so with the new color refresh, I reorganized and put them in rainbow order, which just makes me happy.

My desk has 7 drawers...three on each side, then one in the middle.  I love this desk.  It was always in our office for my entire childhood.  At some point several years ago, it was relegated to the barn for storage, and I eventually ended up with it.  My brother is so jealous.  I'm not sure he's aware that I have another one just like it for my sewing machine.  These suckers are old and solid oak, not to mention huge.  And awesome.  Anyway, most of the things in the drawers are boring, like cellophane bags, glue guns, old, cheap trimmers, paint, etc.  You get the picture.  But my middle drawer holds old Simply Scrappin' kits (which I clearly need to get using, considering I'm 6 years behind on my scrapbooks).  The most used drawer is the top right hand drawer, which is shown above.  This is home to brads, buttons, eyelets (oh yeah, I still have TONS of those!), adhesive, other embellishments, and my vast embossing powder collection.  There are lots of duplicates there, because my grandparents gave me all their stamping stuff a couple of summers ago.  Yes, my grandparents used to stamp.  How awesome is that?

So there you go, a quick tour of my stamping space.  It's not as pretty and organized as some I've seen online, but it's what I have to work with, and it's mine.  I'm blessed to have a space in my little house that I can escape to when I need some time alone and want to create.  I've been learning a lot about being content with what I have, and when I look at this corner and all the stuff packed into it, it's hard to believe I could actually feel like I am somehow lacking anything.  I have so very much to be grateful for!
